Living Treasure of Hawaii
These living treasures have demonstrated excellence and have met very high standards of achievement in their particular field of endeavor and, thus, have made a significant difference toward the betterment of our community," said Chikai Yosemori, Bishop of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission that sponsors the Living Treasure program. The program was started in 1976 and has since recognized over 100 island residents for their contributions.
Pookela
In 1987 during the Year of the Hawaiian Celebration, Mr. Kane was one of 16 persons selected as Pookela (meaning Champion) for excellence in his field. The award honors living individuals of Hawaiian ancestry whose accomplishments and contributions have improved the quality of life for Hawaii's people, through enriching their understanding of the Hawaiian culture.
Charles R. Bishop Award
Presented to Mr. Kane for his research and contributions to the study and preservation of Hawaiian and Polynesian archaeology, natural history, and culture.
